Pokémon Go's upcoming addition of Dynamax mechanics has been something of an open secret - and now we're able to see how some elements will look in-game for the first time.

Fans of Pokémon Go have peered inside the popular mobile game's files to find visual elements of the upcoming Dynamax system, which also offer clues as to how Dynamax Pokémon will be obtained.

Mega Lucario is possibly one of the most highly anticipated Mega Pokémon in the world of Pokémon Go.

The Mega Evolved form of the Aura Pokémon makes history in Pokémon lore as one of the first Pokémon to Mega Evolve. It’s also pretty strong, too.

Mega Lucario also takes the crown as the best Fighting-type attacker in the game, pushing Mega Heracross into distant second. As a Steel-type, however, it just makes the top-three Mega Pokémon, since you lose Counter and Aura Sphere - two of the best attacks in the game.

The proposals took place at the event's big weekend in Madrid - the year's main European meetup for Pokémon Go fans, which Eurogamer recently attended. Happily, all players who popped the question received a 'yes'.

A perfect reward really for players who don't want to buy a Go Fest 2024 ticket, but do want to try out Pokémon Go's new Fusion mechanic since Cosmog eventually evolves into either Solgaleo or Lunala. Both of these Pokémon can be fused with Necrozma, giving you the chance to experiment with Fusion even if this is the first Cosmog in your collection.

Completing Go Fest 2024: The Dawn of a New Discovery is still worth your time though even if you already have Solgaleo and Lunala in your collection as, thanks to there being no limit on how many Dusk Mane and Dawn Wings Necrozmas you can have, you can still transform it into a Fusion form if you so wish.

Sunsteel Strike and Moongeist Beam are the Adventure Effects for Dusk Mane Necrozma and Dawn Wings Necrozma retrospectively in Pokémon Go.

Adventure Effects provide additional useful bonuses to your time in Pokémon Go and were first introduced during Go Tour: Sinnoh in February 2024 with Roar of Time and Spacial Rend. While those Adventure Effects were focused around bending time and space, Sunsteel Strike and Moongeist offer you powers themed around night and day. (So we're bending time again really...)

Like the previous Adventure Effects each one is tied to a specific Pokémon - Sunsteel Strike for Dusk Mane Necrozma and Moongeist Beam for Dawn Wings Necrozma. Due to this, you'll need to use Fusion to create one of these Pokémon.

Fusion allows you to fuse together two Pokémon to create a whole new creature in Pokémon Go. The Pokémon in question are Dusk Mane Necrozma and Dawn Wings Necrozma who were released alongside the mechanic as part of Go Fest 2024.

As their names suggest, you'll need a Necrozma if you want to use Fusion in Pokémon Go, but this isn't the only requirement. Fusion also requires either a Solgaelo or Lunala, a tablespoon of Necrozma Candy, a dash of Cosmog Candy and then either Solar or Lunar Fusion Energy. Habitat hours are a staple of any in-person Pokémon Go event and Go Fest 2024 is no different.

Day One - Saturday 13th July - of Go Fest 2024: Global will cycle through four habitat hours entitled Dawn Meadow, Shining Day, Creeping Dark and Darkest Night. Throughout these hours you'll see a selection of Pokémon appearing more frequently in the wilds of Pokémon Go.

Chinese and Russian Pokémon Go players have reported a brief window of regular gameplay this week - despite long-standing geo-blocking that typically makes the game inaccessible across most of these regions.

Reports collated on top Pokémon Go reddit TheSilphRoad show players able to send in-game postcards from Beijing's Tiananmen Square, site of the 1989 student protest and massacre now subject to strict censorship by the country's government.

For years, Pokémon Go has been unplayable in large swathes of China - and various tourists have recorded their experiences trying to load the smartphone game when visiting. No Pokémon will appear to catch, and no locations will appear on the map.

Released as part of the 8th Anniversary Party, Whispers in the Woods offers players who missed the original shiny Celebi quest, Distracted by Something Shiny, the chance to add this shiny mythical Pokémon to their Pokémon Go collection. Distracted by Something Shiny was released nearly four years ago after all as part of the Secrets of the Jungle event in 2020, so, if you're a newcomer to the game, you wouldn't have had the chance to catch shiny Celebi!

Cyndaquil, the Fire Mouse Pokémon is scurrying in for June’s Community Day Classic – a recurring Pokémon Go event that celebrates a specific Pokémon, bringing them back for another crack at Community Day fame! As with all Community Day events, it brings a bevy of bonuses, including boosted shiny rates and an exclusive move for its final evolution, Typhlosion!

Since Cyndaquil is a starter Pokémon, and thus a relatively rare spawn in Pokémon Go, outside of the occasional special event, this is a great chance to catch one and add all of its evolutions to your Pokédex – especially if you missed its first Community Day event back in 2018 and want a Typhlosion with the exclusive move Blast Burn.

Eight years into Pokémon Go's life, and the game's annual summer Go Fest events remain a firm fixture in the app's event calendar. More than a dozen of these meetups have now taken place around the world, with the most recent this weekend in Madrid, where tens of thousands of Pokéfans braved the heat to catch an enticing array of species ahead of other players.

Go Fest's Global version, a Covid-era invention that remains a lucrative ongoing addition, offers similar rewards next month, but without that same experience of potentially travelling somewhere new, to be among crowds of fellow players. And in both Madrid's Juan Carlos I Park and within the city's narrow streets, there were Pokéfans everywhere. Not since its days back in Dortmund has a city felt so dominated by people playing - from the parade of fans wearing merch or even full Pokémon costumes despite the high temperatures, to the in-game experience where lured PokéStops and full raid lobbies stretched out as far as the eye could see. London, last year, had felt just too big a city for the Pokémon crowds to have made it theirs. Not so here.

It was also an oppurtunity for me to catch up again with Pokémon Go director Michael Steranka, after what has been another busy period for the game. The past few months have seen a number of useful quality-of-life features land in the app, while the recent Go Tour Sinnoh event clearly moved the needle in terms of player engagement. But, as ever, there have been criticisms too - not least around the game's avatar update, which despite its good intentions felt decidedly rushed - and of a general slowdown in the number of Pokémon species being added. I discuss these issues and much more with Steranka below.

The Shares Skies research works a little differently to recent Season-long quests in Pokémon Go. Due to its time-gated nature, you have to complete each part before its specific end date within the Shared Skies season, unlike previous Seasonal quests that gave you until the end of a Season to complete all of its steps.

Stadium Sights is the first event during the Shared Skies season in Pokémon Go.

You can collect a selection of event-exclusive field research tasks throughout this short Pokémon Go event, and can benefit from bonuses like x1.5 hatching Candy and Stardust.

Shared Skies is the 15th game-wide season of Pokémon Go.

The highlight of this season is, of course, Go Fest 2024, but it also promises to bring a selection of new features and events to Pokémon Go, including the Fusion mechanic. A number of new Pokémon have already been announced, along with some of the upcoming in-game events.

Ultra Space Wonders sees the arrival of three Ultra Beasts into Pokémon Go - Naganadel, Stakataka and Blacephalon.

Pokémon Go is set to introduce a form of item sharing when playing within Parties, according to a fresh datamine of the game's files.

This looks set to allow players to share the effects of active items such as Lucky Eggs, Star Pieces and Incenses with other players - though the feature is still in testing so may yet change, PokémonGoHub warned.

The suggestion, though, is that one player will be able to pop a Lucky Egg for double XP and press a button to then share that boost with everyone else in the Party - saving resources and PokéCoins spent on buying premium items separately.

Bounsweet, the Fruit Pokémon, is the focus of May's Community Day in Pokémon Go, making this the second month in a row where a Grass-type Pokémon has been spotlighted. (And the third time this year when you think back to January's Rowlet Community Day.)

It's not hard to see why Bounsweet is categorised as the Fruit Pokémon as its design is heavily inspired by mangosteen fruit. Seriously, look at a mangosteen and then look at Bounsweet. They're exactly the same apart from the fact that Bounsweet has a face. (If your mangosteen has a face, I highly suggest you get in contact with a scientist.) You can even see the inspiration come through in Bounsweet's name.

Name etymology aside, Bounsweet will be spawning far more frequently during this Community Day in Pokémon Go. This makes it the perfect time to catch a 100% IV Bounsweet. You can then evolve this Bounsweet into a powerful Tsareena, which is why it's a good idea to know Tsareena's best moveset. Since this Community Day also marks the release of shiny Bounsweet, you might even find a shiny Bounsweet with perfect 100% stats.

Pokémon Go developer Niantic is taking feedback following the mixed reaction to its recent player avatar refresh.

The game's new-look avatar system went live last week, and replaced all in-game character designs with a more adjustable default option, which now has sliders for weight and specific body parts, as well as more options for skin tones and hair styles.

But the change has received a lukewarm response, with criticism of how the new avatar's faces look, and the sudden change in art style. Over the weekend, the main Pokémon Go reddit was flooded with complaints, while one player who claimed to have been part of an internal beta test where concerns were raised ahead of time said these had not been properly taken on board.

A pair of scientists working in the Antarctic have managed to get their remote research station added as a location in Pokémon Go.

The duo discovered they both played the game after each had individually attempted to get the continent's most isolated research base added as an in-game PokéStop.

Speaking to The Independent, Australian scientists Raimon Hennessy, 29, and Pete Rizzo, 60, explained how they had then managed to gain the attention of Pokémon Go maker Niantic via reddit, which then aided in getting the Davis Research Station added in-game.

Mega Heracross the Mega Evolved form of the Single Horn Pokémon, Heracross, is available Pokémon Go.

This is a pretty cool Pokémon, especially if you think bugs are cute. This design takes the humble stag beetle, turns it into a Pokémon, and then mega evolves it - our one note is that Mega Heracross famously has two horns, despite also being the Single Horn Pokémon.

Mega Heracross also takes the crown as the best Bug-type attacker in the game, pushing its cousin Mega Pinsir into close second. Burying the lead slightly, it’s also the best Fighting-type attacker in the game, kicking Mega Blaziken into close second. If you don’t have one, make sure you pick up enough Mega Heracross Energy while you have the chance!

Bug Out, unsurprisingly, celebrates Bug-types Pokémon Go, with both shiny Combee and shiny Burmy having their encounter rates increased.

As part of this Pokémon Go event, you can complete the Bug Out Collection Challenges and event-exclusive field research tasks. Not to forget all the Bug-type Pokémon appearing more frequently in the wild and bonuses for making Nice, Great and Excellent Throws.

Pokémon Go looks set to add a new mechanic from the main series Pokémon games: the concept of Pokémon Fusion.

References to Fusion have been found in a new datamine of the app (thanks, PokéMiners), and give a strong suggestion for how the mechanic may be implemented - as well as which Pokémon it will be activated for.

Fusion - which sees a separate Pokémon temporarily subsumed by another - would be a fun addition, and is fitting to add now ahead of Necrozma's arrival at Go Fest 2024 - teased by developer Niantic during this week's real-life solar eclipse, and now fully confirmed as being available during this summer's Go Fest events via raid battles.

Niantic has started batching Pokémon for Spotlight Hours in Pokémon Go when the Pokémon, and since this week is particularly underwhelming, it’s a good excuse to try batching them together. Why is that? Because this week we’re chasing two Worms and a Hairy Bug. No, that’s not a euphemism - the hills are alive with the wriggling of Caterpie, Weedle and Wurmple in Pokémon Go. Pokémon Go teased a big new addition the game as the moment of totality hit during yesterday's solar eclipse.

The game used the moment to tease the arrival of Necrozma, the mascot of 3DS games Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, a colossal dragon which - fittingly - can absorb huge amounts of light to transform its body.

A brief teaser video posted to Pokémon Go's social media showed Necrozma's shadow looming over passers by as the eclipse ended, before this year's Pokémon Go Fest logo popped up.

How much does someone who built the foundations of Pokémon Go still play the game, eight years on? It's the first question I ask Ed Wu, senior vice president of Pokémon Go, as we set off on a walk together around a leafy London park - our phones in hand, Pokémon Go open. "I spend as much of my time beating up the game as possible," he laughs. This is often using work-in-progress beta builds, he admits, to ensure upcoming features are bug-tested. But he still plays his "official" main account when he can - and it's clearly a source of pride that his was the first ever user account - or one of the first, he can't quite recall - registered on Pokémon Go's live server back at launch in the summer of 2016.

"It's bananas to think this thing is going to be going into its next decade soon," Wu says. He'll hit a decade working at Niantic even sooner - when he began coding the building blocks of Pokémon Go from an office in Washington, as Niantic scrambled to stay in business. It's fair to say Pokémon Go did the job.

"It's not only healthy, but it's growing," Wu says of the game now. "And we're putting a lot of investment into ensuring it's a great game and has really firm foundations for the next 10 years." Indeed, Pokémon Go's most recent major update has been a major visual refresh to its overworld and encounter screens, where your real-world location and time of day are far better reflected. If you're standing in the countryside, you'll catch Pokémon surrounded by fields and trees. In the city, you'll be around skyscrapers. As we circle a lake in the centre of the park together, its watery backdrop is reflected on our phones as we catch. Wu can't help but stop and point it out.

Mega Venusaur the Mega Evolved form of the Seed Pokémon, Venusaur, is available Pokémon Go.

As the first Pokémon in the Mega Pokédex by number, Mega Venusaur will always hold a special position in Trainers’ hearts. But sentiment aside, it’s still a decent Pokémon to have in your back pocket. Despite now being outclassed by Mega Sceptile, it can still pump out huge damage when you need it to. If you don’t have one, make sure you pick one up when you get the chance!

Like all Mega Evolutions, Mega Venusaur can’t be caught directly in Pokémon Go. Instead, you need to keep defeating it in Mega Raids until you’ve collected enough Mega Venusaur Energy for its temporary evolution.

Hippopotas’s evolution, Hippowdon, is a rarity in that it is reasonable in all three leagues in Pokémon Go. That’s pretty rare for a Spotlight Hour so if you’re into competitive play, this is worth showing up for.

UPDATE 14/3/24: Top Pokémon Go player FleeceKing has had access to his account restored by the game's developer Niantic.

FleeceKing confirmed the news via social media last night and said he was happy with the result, but couldn't "get into the details of the situation".

Today, Niantic has confirmed to Eurogamer it assisted in the account being returned to the high-profile player, and had said its game's internal security wasn't at fault. What was the cause? Interestingly, Niantic says the hack has triggered a push to "further strengthen" the game's account recovery protocol - potentially suggesting the hacker used this method to gain access.

This week’s Spotlight Hour is all about the Mouse Pokémon. No, not Pikachu. No, not Sandshrew (that was last week). The Pikaclone du jour is the newest Mouse Pokémon, Pawmi!

So, if you’re yet to add this Gen 9 Pokémon to your Pokédex, today’s event is the perfect opportunity to catch a Pawmi in Pokémon Go.

Pawmi is a weird Pikaclone in that it actually has potential - and not just because it’s an Electric-type and we like physics jokes. Its final evolution, Pawmot, is reasonable in Great League thanks to its decent moveset, but comes with the caveat of being a glass cannon in Pokémon Go.

The World of Wonders special research quest offers you the chance to get Poipole in Pokémon Go.

It's important to note that World of Wonders was a season-long special research quest released during the World of Wonders season in Pokémon Go. If you didn't claim this quest by 9:59am (local time) on Saturday 1st June 2024, then you won't have access to it.

Poipole is the only Ultra Beast which can evolve, becoming Naganadel after doing so. Thankfully, with the release of World of Wonders Step 5 on Thursday 23rd May 2024, you can now evolve Poipole into Naganadel.
